How to Install RAM: A Step-by-Step Guide

Installing RAM is one of the easiest upgrades you can do yourself, no tools beyond your hands in most cases. It takes about five minutes once you know the steps.

1. Check compatibility first

Before buying or opening anything, confirm your new RAM matches what your system actually supports: the memory standard (DDR4 or DDR5) and the form factor (DIMM for desktops, SODIMM for laptops). 2. Power down and ground yourself

Shut the computer down completely and unplug it from the wall, don't just put it to sleep. Static electricity can damage memory chips, so touch a grounded metal object (like your PC's metal case) before handling the RAM, or use an anti-static wrist strap if you have one.

3. Open the case and find the slots

On a desktop, remove the side panel to expose the motherboard. The memory slots are the long, thin slots near the CPU, usually with small plastic clips at each end. On a laptop, this may mean removing a bottom access panel, some laptops have RAM soldered in and can't be upgraded at all, so check your model first.

4. Open the slot clips

Push the plastic clips at both ends of the slot outward until they click into the open position. This is what locks the stick in place once it's seated.

5. Align the notch and press straight down

Every RAM stick has a small notch along its bottom edge that only lines up one way with the slot. Line it up, then press straight down with firm, even pressure on both ends of the stick at once. You'll feel it click into place, and the clips should snap closed automatically. Don't force it at an angle.

6. Use the right slots for dual-channel

If you're installing two sticks, which slots you use matters. Check your motherboard's manual for the recommended dual-channel pairing, commonly the second and fourth slots counting from the CPU. 7. Close up and power on

Reattach the case panel, plug everything back in, and boot up. If the RAM is seated correctly, the system should start normally. If it doesn't boot or you hear repeated beeps, power off and reseat the sticks, a stick that isn't fully clicked in is the most common cause.

8. Confirm the system sees the new memory

On Windows, open Task Manager → Performance → Memory and check the total matches what you installed. On Mac, check About This Mac. If the total looks short, double-check every stick is fully seated.

9. Enable XMP or EXPO in the BIOS

By default, new RAM often runs at a slower baseline speed until you turn on its rated profile in the BIOS, XMP on Intel systems, EXPO on AMD. Restart into the BIOS (usually Del or F2 at boot), find the memory or overclocking section, and enable the profile. This is what unlocks the speed printed on the box.
