DDR4 vs DDR5 RAM: Which Do You Need?

DDR5 is the newer, faster standard, but DDR4 is still cheaper and perfectly capable. The right choice comes down to one thing first: what your motherboard supports.

Start with compatibility, not performance

This is the most important rule, so it comes first: DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable. They use physically different slots, so a DDR5 stick will not fit in a DDR4 board and vice versa. Your motherboard (and the CPU platform it uses) decides which one you can install. Before buying anything, check your motherboard's specifications for "DDR4" or "DDR5." As a rough guide: most Intel 12th-generation and newer and AMD Ryzen 7000-series and newer platforms use DDR5. Older systems (Intel 10th/11th gen, AMD Ryzen 5000 and earlier) use DDR4.

The real performance difference

DDR5 offers significantly higher bandwidth and better power efficiency than DDR4. On paper the gap is large, but in everyday use and gaming the real-world difference is usually modest, often in the single digits for frame rates, because most games aren't limited by memory bandwidth. Where DDR5 pulls ahead more clearly is in memory-heavy workloads: large file operations, content creation, and applications that move a lot of data at once.

Price and value

DDR5 has come down a lot in price since launch, but DDR4 is still generally cheaper per gigabyte. If you're building on an older DDR4 platform, there's no reason to feel like you're missing out, DDR4 remains a great value and will run modern games well. If you're building a new system on a current platform, DDR5 is the sensible long-term choice since the whole industry is moving that direction.
