RAM Not Working? Common Problems and Fixes
Most RAM problems come down to one of a handful of causes. Work through these in order before assuming a stick is defective.
Computer won't boot after installing new RAM
The most common cause by far is a stick that isn't fully seated. Power off, unplug the system, and remove and reinstall each stick, pressing straight down firmly and evenly until you feel and hear the clips snap shut on both ends. If it still won't boot, try one stick at a time in different slots to narrow down whether a specific stick or slot is the problem. Also double-check the RAM is actually the correct type (DDR4 vs DDR5) for your board, since incompatible RAM often won't post at all.
System only recognizes part of the installed RAM
First, reseat every stick, a loose connection can cause partial detection even when the system boots. Next, confirm you're running a 64-bit operating system, 32-bit Windows caps usable memory around 4GB no matter how much is installed. Finally, check your motherboard's manual for its maximum supported capacity and per-slot limits, some boards need a BIOS update to recognize higher-capacity modules.
Random crashes or blue screens after upgrading
Run a memory test, Windows Memory Diagnostic (built in) or MemTest86 (free, boots from USB) will catch a genuinely faulty module. If the test passes clean, the issue is more likely an unstable speed setting: try disabling XMP/EXPO and running at the default JEDEC speed to see if crashes stop. If they do, your kit may need slightly relaxed timings or a lower speed for full stability on your specific board.
Repeated beeping and no display on boot
Most motherboards use beep codes to report hardware problems before the display even initializes, and memory issues are one of the most common causes of a beep-code failure. Power down, reseat each stick firmly, and test them one at a time in different slots to isolate whether it's a specific stick, a specific slot, or a compatibility issue.
Is it safe to mix different RAM sticks?
It can work, but it's a common source of subtle problems. Mixed sticks typically run at the slower module's speed, and different timings between kits can cause occasional instability that's hard to diagnose. If you're adding memory to an existing system, try to match capacity, speed, and timings as closely as possible, or better, buy a matched kit and replace everything at once.
When it really is a dead stick
If a module fails a memory test, won't get recognized in any slot, or causes the same crash pattern regardless of what else you change, it's likely faulty. Most reputable brands offer solid warranties (often lifetime on desktop kits), so check your RAM's warranty terms before assuming you need to buy a replacement out of pocket.
