RAM Speed vs CL Latency: What Actually Matters

A kit advertised as "DDR5-6000 CL30" has two numbers that both affect performance. Here's what each one means and how to compare kits without overthinking it.

What the speed number (MHz) means

RAM speed, written in MHz or MT/s (for example DDR5-6000), measures bandwidth, how much data the memory can move per second. A higher number means more data throughput. This is the headline figure most kits advertise, and within the same generation, faster is generally better, up to the point your platform actually supports.

What the CL number means

CL, or CAS Latency, measures delay, how many clock cycles pass before the memory starts delivering requested data after it's asked. A lower CL means less delay. So when you see "CL30," lower is better. The catch is that CL alone doesn't tell the whole story, because it's measured in clock cycles, and faster RAM has shorter cycles.

How they work together

Because CL is counted in clock cycles, you can't compare CL numbers across different speeds directly. A DDR5-6000 CL30 kit actually has lower real-world latency than a DDR5-6000 CL40 kit, but comparing a 6000 CL30 kit to a 5600 CL28 kit requires a bit more thought, since the slower kit has fewer cycles of delay but each cycle is longer.

The practical rule: when two kits are the same speed, pick the one with the lower CL. When speeds differ, a moderately faster kit with a slightly higher CL is usually the better all-rounder.

How much does it really matter?

For most people, not as much as the marketing suggests. Going from a slow, high-latency kit to a fast, low-latency one yields real but modest gains, often a few percent in games and memory-sensitive tasks. Capacity and simply having dual-channel memory matter more than chasing the absolute best timings. Buy a sensibly fast kit with good timings at a fair price rather than paying a big premium for the last few percent.
