Best RAM for AMD Ryzen vs Intel
Both platforms run the same DDR4 and DDR5 sticks, but they respond to memory speed differently. Here's how to spend your RAM budget wisely on each.
Why AMD Ryzen cares more about RAM speed
On AMD Ryzen CPUs, memory speed is linked to the chip's internal "Infinity Fabric" interconnect that ties the cores together. Because of that link, faster RAM tends to give Ryzen a more noticeable real-world boost than it gives Intel, particularly in gaming. This is why you'll often see specific memory-speed recommendations aimed at Ryzen builders.
For recent Ryzen platforms (Ryzen 7000 and 9000 on DDR5), there's a well-known sweet spot around DDR5-6000 with low timings, fast enough to perform well while keeping the memory controller running in its most efficient, stable mode. Pushing far beyond that can force the controller into a slower mode and actually reduce performance, so faster isn't automatically better.
Why Intel is more forgiving
Intel platforms are less sensitive to memory speed. They still benefit from faster RAM, but the gains are usually smaller, and Intel chips comfortably run a wide range of speeds. That makes Intel builds a bit more forgiving: you can prioritize capacity and a fair price over chasing the highest-rated kit, and you'll rarely leave much performance on the table.
Practical recommendations
- Ryzen (DDR5): aim for a quality DDR5-6000 CL30 kit, the widely recommended balance of speed and stability.
- Intel (DDR5): a good DDR5-6000 kit is great; you have more flexibility to go higher or save money without much downside.
- Either platform on DDR4: DDR4-3600 CL16-18 is the classic value sweet spot.
- Always check your motherboard's QVL (qualified vendor list) or supported speeds before buying a high-speed kit.
Whatever platform you're on, enabling your memory's rated speed profile (XMP on Intel, EXPO on AMD) in the BIOS is what unlocks the advertised performance. Without it, the RAM runs at a slower default speed.
